The problem for Virginia is that it’s just too danged easy for the locusts to cross the bridge from the People’s Republic of Maryland, which they’ve pretty much destroyed.
Actually the rural counties in Maryland have a rather strong Republican constituency. I live in the western-most county, Garrett, which has voted Republican for a hundred years. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see Democrats sporting bumper stickers that say “Takes a lot of courage to be a Democrat in Garrett County.”
