How are we supposed to know? Is there a time limit or something?
"Dad, you're my father. I'm your son. I love you. I always have and I always will. But you think of yourself as a colored man. I think of myself as a man." - Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?
When those who think they must define themselves otherwise finally come to their senses and proclaim, "We are human beings created in the image of God," my response will be, "I have always thought it so; it was never otherwise, even when there were those who wrongly proclaimed it was otherwise."

The black guys I sometimes play ball with I call Al, Prince and Dave. If they are neighbors, clients or potential clients I call them Mr., Miss or Mrs. Whatever unless asked to call them by first name. If I don’t know them and we meet I call them young man or lady, sir or ma’am. I refer to them in conversations where their race is pertinent as black people.
The “others”, the thugs, the trash, I sometimes in anger or frustration refer to with the big expletive. They are not the same people. And they’re not the ones with whom I’d ever be having a conversation about race anyway.
