I have always suspected that the choice to add the body scan technology to airport searches, and the specific brand/model chosen, had to be based on crony capitalism and not detection technology.

Case in point: access the Protected Area at your local nuclear power plant or other similarly-secured facility, and stand through separate machines for metal detection and sniffer of explosive materials. That sniffer doesn’t want some flunky to see your privates with ionizing radiation, it wants to know if you possess or have chemical evidence of working on a bomb. That is THE hazard they are trying to detect!

When I used to visit DOE labs in the 1980’s - 1990’s, you stepped onto a platform on a machine that looked like an elaborate physicians scale combined with a computer kiosk. Then you placed your arm into a secure cuff while you were weighed, sniffed and inspected.
