They already had a black tag team member come out as gay about a year ago with no ill affect that I can see (cant remember his name though).
Darren Young. Him and Titus O'Neill were tag team partners.

The optic of a LGBT getting their ass kicked is too much for the WWE to pass up. People will pay money to see that.

Something the WWE doesn't like to talk about: In the early 1990s, there was a real life scandal involving two openly gay WWE Backstage executives Pat Patterson and Terry Garvin (both were former wrestlers as well.) The two used their positions in the company to sexually harass young wrestlers and exchanged sexual favors for better positions in the company, better pushes, etc. Patterson and Garvin, along with ring announcer Mel Phillips were also involved in sexually abusing young men recruited as "ring boys" to set the the ring and perform other behind the scenes jobs in towns where the then-WWF promoted wrestling cards. All three resigned from the company when the scandal broke, and the WWF reached settlements with the parties involved. Patterson was brought back into the company about a year later, and has been protected by Vinnie Mac ever since, even putting him into the WWE Hall of Fame.
(During his time as an active wrestler, Terry Garvin was billed as the brother of Ron Garvin, but in reality the two were not related.)

Pat Patterson was apparently the first openly gay pro wrestler

“It was always fake.”
Oddly enough I am friends (via being an avid weightlifter) with a number of pro-wrestlers, past and present.
A better description is “per-determined.” The athleticism and beatings these guys take is real.

Damn I'm getting old!Well, I guess I'm old, too, because I also remember all of those guys. I remember a card I went to at the old Philadelphia Arena in the early 1970s. They had a 20 man "Battle Royal", with ten "faces" and ten "heels." Before the start of the match, Ernie Ladd got all of the heels into a huddle to go over the strategy of who they would take out first, second, etc. When the bell rang, Ladd turned around to face the good guys in the other corner. As soon as he did, his fellow heels all grabbed him, and tossed him out of the ring first.
