I think you have nailed it. If you look at the only close to honest polling we have covering the period from before the RNC and DNC conventions through yesterday you find that Hillary has gained .1% on Trump.

Here is the USC Plot for today. You can see the convention bounces have settled out and we are pretty much back to where we started. The MSM campaign to show Trump collapsing in the polls was a lie and it has failed to move the needle.
