Take an issue away from the press and "sort of" take an issue away from his in-party detractors.

Costs some confusion and capital among his supporters, but likely has no impact on any of the races. Endorsements won't change the way the endorsee treats the candidate, he knows that.

I look at it as a meaningless in substance, important in form step on the path to "being presidential."
