Why some whites are waking up to racism

Not long ago, Becky Deen Tai would never have imagined herself attending a civic meeting about police officers’ treatment of African Americans.

She’d grown up a white girl in a family with roots in the Deep South, and only recently had become “more aware of how unaware I am,” she said, later recalling her astonishment at learning via social media that black mothers often lecture their sons on how to avoid being targeted by law enforcement.

I honestly think that “the talk” that black mothers and fathers have with their young sons is a contributing factor to the resistance to police typified in all these “resisting a LEO” videos/episodes we’re seeing. Honestly, if you are told/reminded regularly, “Now, I want you to watch out when talking to police. You be careful! Don’t you give them a reason to think you’re dangerous. They might overreact just like they did with (fill in the blank),” you are going to be uptight, wondering if your “day” has arrived.

I think the talk is important, but it should not focus on race. It should focus on how to deal with cops when you are their person of interest.

As a white man, I know that you need to cooperate with police up to answering irrelevant questions. But you must always be respectful, no matter how much of a turd the cop is.

I told my wife, after watching some of these videos of blacks getting shot by cops that I can’t relate to the guy that gets shot. And it’s not because of their race. It’s because of their action. Who the heck runs from police at a traffic stop? Who the heck fights them? Who the heck, after telling the cop he has a gun, reaches down to the gun?!!!

That is just STOOOOOOPID.

No wonder they are getting shot.

Now, the one black guy who got shot that I COULD relate to was the one outside his car, that when the cop asked him to give him ID, he reached in his car for his wallet. It was a reasonable thing to do. However, I learned from that that even then it looks like I need to tell the cop, “I’m reaching for my wallet in the car”, and if the cop says, don’t, I stop and wait for further instructions.

“The talk” should focus on why cops need to be careful and that you need to respect that.

And the Chris Rock video is very instructive.

Yeah. The common thread in all these "tragic stories" is the failure to cooperate with law enforcement. I agree with you; I cannot relate to doing anything other than cooperate in that situation (it's the way I was taught [what the situation calls for]...but, it's also a healthy awareness of what might happen if I don't). That said, I believe that "the talk" and all the "sensationalization" of these episodes with constant replaying of these "tragedies" will have an effect on behavior.

I'm not justifying any behavior that fails to cooperate. Just trying to imagine what might go through the head of someone who's been conditioned in such a way.

And watching all these videos (coupled with black flash mobs, knockout game, etc.) is turning a LOT of whites, asians, native americans, Indians, Arians, Arabs, etc. into racists against blacks. It’s happening. I’m seeing it all around me in comments on the internet as well as people on the street. Sometimes you can see it in their expression when coming into contacts with black people.

I actually blame Obama for a lot of it, but not all.

We have three black families in our neighborhood, one of whom with which I am well acquainted. They told they specifically moved to our neighborbood to get away from other blacks.

Until the black community purges the thug sub-culture from their community, they will continue to experience the many kinds violence and prejudice in their community. You are so correct. The problems in the black culture have to be fixed from within the black culture.

Had a black house mate in college. Most racist human I have met by 10 miles. Every other human, black or white, he called them the N word. Hated whites for being white. Imagined that everyone was a racist N-——.

We just stayed away from him. Because of his speech and the smell of his room.
