Trump didn't though. He was blindsided by this because the Dems are going all out to defeat him.
If you listen to Rush (I no longer do, I read the transcripts afterwards and listen to Andrew Malkow on Sirius Patriot 125 between 11-2pm, he is FAR better) he gave Trump a bit of advice.
The affair gave Trump a nice opening to use Twitter to smack the living sh!t out of the Clintoon Noos Networx.
And he did so royally today. Over and over. Bee-You-tee-Ful!
I know he did. Trump has to look at them in ideological terms. And he’s right.

Trump says something perceived as off the wall. Media, #nevertrumpers and cruzers go absolutely Bat$XXt crazy in protest... after all the naysayers are revealed, or close to that point.. Trump, his semi-supporters or someone unexpected from "out there" dump the verified opposition research on his opponents... trump is proven to be correct again... and the target is pretty much obliterated and made ready for the next news-cycle dumpster deposit.
We have watched Donald do this cycle at least 15-16 times during the primaries as he wrenched dominant and unflinching control of the entire primary process, the republican party, a sizable portion of the Independents, and (soon to be proven), minority Black, Hispanic and (non-whore) pro life females of every stripe.
It truly is a thing of beauty, that we have seen it on the average of 2-8 blows by Trump and company per contender... and the result is ALWAYS the same. The #nevertrumpers, and cruzinistas, are apparently so whacked out in emotional and incensed anger at their ongoing beatings by trump, they don't recognize the next one is in the pipeline until they are buried.... yet again. ROFLMAO!!!
As has been said, it is a thing of beauty. The secret is... Trump has a massive portfolios filled with his attack plans along with customized and useful "speaking gaffes" that are used to trigger them in the press remotely before he ever opens his mouth the first. Only a FOOL could (upon examining the history) still believe these are not planned, researched and injected via premeditated "gaffes" of opportunity. I still speak with these so called conservative folks, though some are real (and naive) conservatives, who actually fail to see the pattern and who think that thus far, trump has just barely "lucked out" by not being destroyed via these supposed "lack of tone control" gaffes. Trump always comes at this stuff sideways.
The TRUTH IS... his part of his "lack of tone control" is the very item that lets you know... another Trump ambush is underway... and guaranteed to bury another opponent. Trump has a plan for instituting a 'punch back' for every potential attack. He lays in wait then fires for effect. Very nicely done Donald.
Columbo always acted stupid... while he was trapping criminal perpetrators... "the stupid mouthing off" trump feigns is the primary clue we have that we are about to experience the next deliciously planned and executed "attack" dump in process.
Trump KNOWS the dems are too stupid and stubborn to figure it out... THEY think trump took their bait... but in fact... HE planned it in advance. Who in the Clinton camp, is actually WITH Trump? Hillary has no clue.
