How can this be?
Much of Rio is still third world. Modern plumbing, sanitation, treatment is scarce except for upper classes and commercial districts. The raw sewage is dumped into the bay and pollutes everything it touches, including many of the beaches. You can go from palaces to shanties, in just blocks.

If any tourists complain to the local authorities that they were robbed, the authorities can say, “What did you expect?”
I know a German born woman with a magnet on her fridge that says: I’m German, but I’m taking pills for it.
