The original B1-A was delivered in 1974. The Program was canceled by President Carter in 1977. Only five were built.

Rumor has it that Carter was told about the new F-111 Stealth Fighter and decided the B1-A was no longer needed. I have no idea if there is any truth to that considering the F-111 was only capable of carrying two Bombs.

When President Reagan came to Office in 1980, he resurrected the Program and the B1-B Lancer was designed and built. It is still flown today.

Republican Congressman Bob Dornan of Orange County CA, an ex Sabre Fighter Pilot in Korea was known as B1 Bob because of his commitment in resurrecting the Program.

?? F111 was not stealth.

F117 was stealth.

Thanks for the additional information,KC!

Hard to believe the B-1 has been around for over forty years as a flying bomber.

One correction for the record—the F-111 in your post would be the F-117 Nighthawk, the stealth fighter that debuted in 1983. (The F-111 is the Aardvark that flew in Vietnam in the late 1960s.)

Wow, that’s is 33 years ago already!
