Yes, I suppose. More precisely, it was to prevent the government from shutting down the press, but it does not prevent the government from co-opting the press.

It's up to the people to resist the government. The press can pick a side of that tension, and it has, on the side of the government.

Really? That would surprise me, since co-opting necessarily involves lack of independence, and therefore lack of freedom.

I’ll have to go read it....
