I guess he’s at that age where he gets embarrassed when he gets a hug. Boys are like that.
Indeed. Tweens and teens in general don't like hugs from family members.
I just asked my 20 year-old son how he would have felt at 10 or 11 at a huge public event when you're young, all dressed up, and know that the cameras are on you all the time.

I would imagine he would have been bored by all of the speakers, embarrassed by all the attention and really tired, having to stay up way past his normal bedtime.
