Actually, a lot of shia families name their son “Ali”, more so than Sunni families. But it’s such a common name in Iran, and not necessarily & solely used by ‘religious’ or practising families.

It’s his lastname that I’m wondering about. Sonboly is also Iranian, but could also be Afghan anda couple of others. Sonboly, however, is definitely not Turkish.

We also don’t know anything about his family in terms of how religious they were, etc..

No, and we probably won't be told either (by the usual suspects).

Can the surname be derived from Sonbol? Arabic with links to Egypt.

There are also at least two villages in Iran with the name Sonbol. And as you said it may aslo have Urdu roots.
