The 44,000 Muslim recruits raised by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj al Husseini, were organized into the 13th SS Gebrigs (Mountain) Division “Handschar” (Sword) and 21st SS Gebrigs Division “Skanderbeg”. They had German SS officers and were used in anti-partisan operations against the Yugoslavians. SS officer, who had strong stomachs where atrocities were involved, were horrified at the atrocities committed by the Muslim SS troopers.
