There was no known motive for the shooting in Germany's third-largest city, which went into lockdown with transport halted and highways sealed off immediately after the attack on Friday evening.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the motive for the attack was not yet clear.
"The motives for this abhorrent act have not yet been completely clarified - we still have contradictory clues," he said in a statement.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility but supporters of Islamic State celebrated on social media.
"The Islamic state is expanding in Europe," read one tweet.

Just watched the press conference on SKY NEWS.
First, that has got to be the worst interpreter I have ever heard. My ears were bleeding.
All I got out of it was poor bullied mentally ill youth with absolutely no connection to Islam who collected reports of mass shootings and was getting mental health care accidentally shot some innocent bystanders while trying to commit suicide.

“No evidence of a motive” after an Allahu-Akbar attack is right up there with “unexpected economic numbers” after yet another disappointing report on the Obama recovery. There will never be evidence of motive that meets liberal standards, since, even with a confession that it was done because ISIS, because Koran, or because Allah, the terrorist won’t be believed.
Islam is a religion of peace, as they have reminded us after each of the 27,000 Islamic terrorist attacks in the past 15 years. Any contrary evidence will be ignored, deleted, and suppressed.
So, supposing for the moment he was a lone, if Islamically deranged, wolf, I still have this question:
How easy is it for a teenager to obtain firearms and ammo in supposedly disarmed Germany? Easier than obtaining a personal computer (to paraphrase Obama)?

Questions:
1. Why are Western governments Hell-bent on bringing millions of these murderous demons into their peaceful countries and resettling them, expenses paid? Despite weekly and daily slaughters of their own children?
2. Why do Western governments and their law enforcement agencies (even “counter” terrorism agencies!) lie about every detail of these Muslim terror attacks, routinely destroy and hide evidence, and ultimately try to dismiss the attacks altogether as “nothing to do with Islam,” “random,” and “motive unknown?”
3. What entity is orchestrating this military invasion across Western continents by a zealot, apocalyptic, murdering army whose sole goal is conquest? What is that entity’s ultimate goal, in other words, when and why would the invasion stop if left alone?
Will trying to “prevent terrorism” or “counter violent extremists” or “fight ISIS” or even “reform Islam” ever accomplish anything, or is eliminating implementing governments the only solution?
Islam is on the march with absolutely nothing standing in its way, by design.
DERP isn’t an acronym. It’s an indication somebody said or did something stupid.
