So out of the vast and diverse universe of Democrats, Hillary thought the best of the bunch was a boring, old, presumably straight, Southern, white man. This pick laughs in the face of Hillary’s constituencies, real and aspirational:
Women.
African Americans.
Hispanics.
Bernie’s old lefties.
Bernie’s youthful lefties.
Other anti-Wall Street lefties.
The entire country except the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
What it gains her:
More Wall Street money to waste?
Cash from Terry MacAuliffe for moving Kaine out of his way?
A better chance at Virginia’s electoral votes (without Obama’s coattails, it’s not clear that Kaine can carry his home state.
Someone with experience as a governor in a state where governors have relatively little power, and as mayor of Richmond.
Someone who has done even less than Hillary with a Senate seat, where Kaine has been practically invisible.
Kaine’s foreign policy, military, anti-terrorism, and economic experience=? Er, next question...
I have to assume all other her other choices turned her down or had too much provable baggage.
And why announce this now, taking away the slightest glimmer of interest from their convention?
Because the FEMA camps are ready?
