“and if Trump turns out to be a Jackass in an Elephant suit”

Then I will live with it. Trump is the nominee and more than acceptable to me. If you cannot deal with that then find a forum that cares.

There were a lot of old time freepers who left or were zotted during the primaries. Most were sincere good people with strongly held convictions, I respected them and their opinions.

Now, those who were for other candidates than Trump, mostly Cruz supporters, should either respectfully discuss the campaign, be quiet or leave. That is my opinion and The moderators have their own.

After yesterday and this morning anyone still supporting Cruz will no longer have my respect.

I don't think it does. At least my first reaction to the teleprompter shot that was posted last night was that it was simply a part of Newt's strategy to turn Cruz's words around on him. Which is what Newt did.

“So to paraphrase Ted Cruz, if you want to protect the Constitution this fall, there’s only one possible way and that’s to vote the Trump-Pence ticket.”

He didn't go word for word by what the teleprompter said, but I'm not sure if he didn't rephrase what he was reading from the prompter.

Maybe Newt expected an endorsement. My gut feeling is that he was looking at a bullet point on the teleprompter and expounded on it or changed it a bit.

Perhaps you're right.

I shouldn't be so nit picky, but the man is a lawyer who makes his living off of other people's money with his words.

If he actually wanted to congratulate, he most certainly knows how to do so in such a way that all would have heard it.

However, his speech seemed to indicate that if he really wanted to he would have, but he didn't, so he won't.

Otoh, maybe he'll get around to it later maybe, just like with that endorsement pledge. He'll do that later, too.

He said that he wanted to and his word is his bond.

Rove just said on Fox that Trump did not ask for a copy of Cruz’s speech and did not vette it.

I should have added, who do you believe? Last night on the live blog it was stated it was submitted and accepted, also implied he went off topic.

Cruzy. Somebody believed that a very proud Texan male would endorse a candidate who called him Lyin' Ted and attacked his family? Who thought that?

A better theory is that Trump believes that what happened works to Trump's advantage.

I won’t judge Cruz. Last night I was disappointed in him, but some take longer healing wounds. I also believe that God allowed this to take place, and that if we continue praying for this country, He will rescue it from evil. And looking at some social media sites last night, I saw many independents on the fence feeling better about the Trump ticket. I also saw some Never-Trumpers completely dismayed by Cruz’s step out of character.

People, even here on FR, will have all sorts of opinions different than myself, but personally, I’m secure in voting for Trump because I can see past his bombastic, made for TV character. I can clearly see enough of his heart to see his intentions are pure. He does love America. He loves it enough to lay his entire life’s passion and career on the side, to to try and right our ship. He’s sick to death of this destruction to our country, and he’s blessed to have a huge fortune with which to pull something like this off. In a much smaller scale, I know someone like him, who’d give you the shirt off his back, but you’d never know it if you weren’t his family or closest friends.

I think Brit Hume said it best last night about Newt’s role following Cruz. First order of business - clean up on aisle nine. Newt used what Ted said to boost up Trump...and he did it very well.

I wish someone would call him out on Fox. Why would they have that creep talk anyway? Maybe that’s why their sound connection suddenly failed.

I know someone whose step daughter was Miss America and for a year she traveled with Trump and worked with his children, whom she also admired immensely.

The rest of friend’s family also traveled with him and said he is very kind, gracious, etc.

My feeling is he gives back what he gets. If he’s challenged, lied about, or the like, he hits back harder so the receiver thinks twice about challenging him again.

If you are sincerely kind to him he returns it in favor and more so.

What is your problem? Perhaps now is a good time for your opus

What if he turns out to be exact who he says he is....Read his two policy books, look at his interviews over thirty years, read his policy papers.

“I truly don’t think we have a lot of room to judge him.”

And what if Trump only gets 80% of the Republican vote in Nov. and loses a close race because of Cruz encouraging his voters not to feel obligated to vote for the Republican nominee? Can’t we judge him if he personally brings us open borders, amnesty, numerous more terrorist attacks, a dissolution of our national sovereignty, many trillions more in debt, higher taxes, more business strangling regulations, an expansion of Obamacare, permanent Common Core, the gradual elimination of the Second Amendment, and a hard-left supermajority on the Supreme Court? Believe me, he will be judged if Trump loses a close election.

“This post is completely misleading as this is from Newts speech not Cruz.”

No, you misinterpreted the title, which says “was expected to endorse.” That makes it clear it was not talking about Cruz but what someone else (in this case Newt) expected him to do.

Cruz certainly could have phrased his speech in a way that made it clear he wants Hillary defeated, even if he didn’t explicitly endorse Trump. He wouldn’t have been booed if he had even just done that. Naturally, Cruz is smart enough to know that he was giving Hillary a lot of help and fodder. And she took advantage of it immediately by quoting him. One can only assume that he believes if Hillary wins, he can be the one to swoop in in 2020 and win the presidency. Fat chance of that.

I don’t know how much to trust Trump, but at this point,

1. He’s not Hillary.
2. Not an ISIS operative
3. He is invested in the same America that I am.

Trump shouldn’t have trusted him to do a speech. I am sure its a mistake that Trump will not make a second time.

I don't think it was a mistake at all. IMHO, it was a calculated, strategic move, with very little downside. No doubt in my mind that Trump considered the possibility that Cruz would pull something like this. This isn't Trump's first rodeo with dishonest characters like Cruz.

Up Side Calculation: If Cruz gives Trump a full-throated endorsement, it's a big win for party unity. Trump looks gracious and statesmanlike. A uniter. He gives Cruz and his supporters a chance to save face and demonstrate their own graciousness and rise to the occasion with country-before-personal politics. Fence-mending and moving forward begins.

Up side Calculation Part II -- If Cruz betrays Trump, Cruz will out himself for what he is, live, on prime time national TV--just standing there, exposed in all his naked ambition. Classless, selfish, bitter. There'd be no denying it, no spinning it. Cruz would be finished. The party and America wins. No slow processes of healing or doing those diplomatic, gentlemanly dances. The bandaid is ripped off in one swift movement, by Cruz himself, and painful though it is for the party for that moment, its over.

For Trump, the cost benefit ratio was a no brainer. It's just further evidence that this guy is playing on a level far, far above the heads of the political class.
