I have to wonder if it isn't the end-result of a century's deterioration of public education. Young writers don't know history, haven't read the great Western Canon, are totally ignorant of the Bible and biblical allusions, and, frankly, can't write very well to begin with.
All they're capable of is bad remakes of what came before.
It’s also got a lot to do with Risk Aversion. Making a film is very expensive. They will green light garbage like this in a heartbeat compared to taking a risk on an unknown. The music industry is even worse because all the money is gone. When multi-million dollar films are stolen and seen worldwide on line for free the way music is, it will get even worse. Currently there industry is protected by bandwidth. That won’t last much longer.

Interesting point. I get the impression that old movies and TV shows from decades past, are written better, with more nuance and depth to characters and storylines.
