Flame on. While the Olympic torch was being carried through the Brazilian city of Joinville on Thursday, a man attempted to put out the flame with a fire extinguisher. A runner ran through the streets with the torch when a spectator came out of nowhere and did his best to extinguish the flame. The man got one burst of the extinguisher off before he was swarmed by security. The attempt was, fortunately, a failure, but even in failure, a second attempt doesn't bode well for the remaining days of torch transit. We don't know the most recent attacker's motivations, but his actions build on the initial douse attempt from late June. The torch was passing through the southwestern Brazilian city of Maracaju when a 27-year-old man threw a bucket of water at the torch. The splash missed, hitting the carrier and security guards.

Definitely a mistake going to Rio at all.

So if someone manages to put out that torch...then what? No Olympic games? The torch running from Greece is like a primitive religious ceremony. It originated in the 1936 (Nazi) Olympics. No one needs to get stressed out if the flame has to be re-lit.

You didn’t remember that!
They repeated that clip umpty dozen times after it happened. Only thing folks remember about the opening of the 1988 games.

Remember it well.
Laughing like a drain at it did attract a few derisory remarks....”Bovvered?”

Thanks - I was being sarcastic to make the point that it’s no big deal.

I thought of that immediately a few years later when I saw that the scene in “Mars Attacks,” where the pious hippie releases a dove in response to the Martian ambassador’s statement that “we come in peace!” The ambassador, frightened by the bird, promptly draws his raygun, blasts it out of the sky and the fight is on.

Walking home after work I had noticed a cluster of people staring at an appliance story window at that epic debacle with OMGs batted back and forth. Arrived at my local pub for cold adult refreshment to find the bartender had taped the whole ceremony for the benefit of late arrivals. That scene played over and over. Quite a few wicked and witty comments were made. “Thank god puppies don't have wings!” sticks in my mind.

I think we were in the midst of a divorce at that time, so I don’t think I was watching much TV.
