Tubing nightmare: Women thought river went in circle

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – They left for what they thought would be an easy float down Muskegon River Tuesday afternoon – but ended up spending the night on the river bank, scared and yelling for help.

The trio of young women were rescued 20 hours later after a fisherman eventually heard their cries, said Muskegon Township Deputy Fire Chief Bob Grabinski.

The women, all in their 20s, had never been tubing before and decided it would be a fun thing to do, Grabinski said. So they bought some tubes and headed to the popular launch site at the Maple Island Road bridge, Grabinski said.

"They were informed by somebody at the bridge that the river goes in a circle and if they put in there they would come back to their car," he said. "Not knowing anything, they set off on their little adventure."

Yes he does. Congratulations. Speaking for myself the smartest thing I ever did was marry an intelligent woman.

“Just a few seconds of logical thought should tell anyone there is no way a river could run in a circle.”

There are quite a few slow flowing rivers that run in large meanders, that would only require a short walk to get back to the starting place (if one knows where to depart).

The meanders eventually get cut off and form “oxbow” lakes.

So the idea of a river coming back to close to the takeoff point is not completely silly.

Coming close isn’t the same as “going in a circle” though...

I applaud their sense of adventure but take a peek at a map.

What a good way to get killed

My daughter and her roommate wanted to go backpacking on an island in Lake Michigan. She called for some advice.

“How are you getting to the island?”

“Canoe.”

“How far is it?”

“Nine miles.”

“NO”

Once they realized that was stupid, they took a ferry.

We had several training conversations, developed a backup plan, filed a trip plan with a local friend and had a blast.

The wilderness can hurt. Bad. But if you’re in control, it’s a lot better. Hopefully these young ladies learned a valuable lesson. After all, it’s not an adventure until something goes wrong.

I convinced my sis-in-law that the two causeways kept Galveston Island from floating away. She is a RN, graduated from Texas A&M University!

Do you mean incentivized to learn? Or forced?

Ahhh no. The only people who would believe that a river goes in a circle are those who would believe that Guam will “tip over and capsize”, ie children and idiots.

LOL.
We are sometimes forced by the incentive or the negative reinforcement.

From your comment stating “by the third grade” I knew we were in general agreement that childhood training is best done early but then you added that comment where I could tell you have had some exasperation.

I was giving encouragement and not criticism.
