My mother was VERY even handed, so when she gave a compliment, you KNEW that you had done extremely well! :-)

As a parent, I followed her lead and do so with my grand as well.

I HATE the "EVERYONE GETS A TROPHY" crap and doing away with Valedictorians, etc.!

My parents were very thorough in instilling, in me, how important constant learning is and that one shouldn't talk about what one did NOT know. I believe that everyone needs to keep learning as long as one lives. And I live by the motto that the more I know, the more I need to know. :-)

Taste, OTOH, is a subjectively personal thing, but there IS good, bad, and absolutely NO taste too. LOL
