“Not that it really matters, but I am a black person.”
Well, I’d say that fact matters a great deal in responding to my inquiry. Our daughter’s boyfriend is from a Nicaraguan family, and he is mixed race. Through him, we have seen and heard about the discrimination he has to bear, and it isn’t a pretty situation. So much to say, if you haven’t actually walked in somenone’s shoes, you probably can’t understand how life affects him. As I see it, we have life’s realities bumping up against human rights. It has devolved into perceived self-preservation trumping equality. I guess for me, equal economic opportunity has to preceed any resolution. BTW your comments were spot on, and I now understand where you’re coming from re Newt.
The flip side of the coin is that you have shown wisdom at being open to learning from someone much younger and of a different background than yourself. Not all in-laws are capable of such respect and humility. So I have high regard for the Humanitarian traits of Newt Gingrich. He has shown love, fascination and respect for God’s creatures. Ask him about his favorite Zoo’s around the world. He could go on for hours.
