Yup. I have a few stories along those lines. Hubby was leaving on a medevac once and forgot something, colleague was standing “at the red line” so hubby could retrieve said item, cursing his name hoping he wouldn’t end up just how you describe. Still thought daughter’s comment was funny though.
SAC base. . .standard.
TAC bases, not so much.
MAC, not hardly. . .
At least he got the right state
and landed
pilot brain farts can be deadly
Yea, we’re lucky the pilot didn’t try to defect to Canada with a plane load of passengers. ;-)
and he’s lucky the USAF didn’t think ISIS was bringing a planeload of hostages to a SAC base
maybe not a red ‘X’ then... but some thing to differentiate?
An arrow pointing “that way to the civilian airport” maybe?
It’s OK, they didn’t INTEND to land at Ellsworth.

well, not exactly “happy” it just gave us something to do
On an instrument approach, you essentially have that. But, this airplane had apparently been cleared for a visual approach.
It would have been difficult to see the ground clearly, as it was 5 minutes after sunset on the ground. It's possible the pilots were staring into the sun just above the horizon (remember, they are at a higher altitude).
Very easy to do when cleared for a visual approach instead of the ILS/. I have done it at night at Norfolk and Newburgh.
They didn’t. They got permission to land, and they did. Just at the wrong place.

My favorite comment: It's too funny that this happened while the pilots are picketing for better pay. Worth every penny!
