I will still have plenty to eat at the barbecue today. Grilled meats with lots of veggies. Buttered brussels sprouts, roasted garlic, mushrooms and hot peppers, etc. I have no problem staying away from the junk food because I fill up on the good stuff. When others are having dessert, I'm taking the dog for a walk.
I was headed for a heart attack as well with my old ways. It is never too late to change to healthier habits.
Atkins/low carb has worked before. I bought a Veghetti to make squash noodles so no more pasta, & whatever goes over rice works with veghetti.
Staying away from bread, pasta, potatoes, sugar, & rice is what I call the Al Sharpton diet: “White is NOT right!!”
