When I go to the local WalMart in Yuma (there are three), I check to see if there is any .22 ammunition. At some point, increased production and falling demand should cross, allowing for more .22 on the shelves. At the WalMart on Frontage road, toward the Foothills, I was surprised to see .22 ammunition. It was the first time in three years.
There were 2,300 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags and 1,000 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity. The Mini-Mags were in plastic 100 round boxes at $7.47 a box. The Standard Velocity were in paper, 50 round boxes at $3.47 a box.
A perky, pretty clerk, Yittzel, was happy to answer my questions. She was a joy to deal with, and did not have any problem with me taking pictures. She said that they seldom saw .22 ammunition, perhaps once a month. She thought it might be coming in a little more frequently lately, but it was still uncommon. She was surprised when she came in and found .22 ammunition on the shelves that morning. She doubted if it would last more than a couple of days.
A customer came up to the counter and bought 300 rounds of CCI mini-mags, the maximum allowed. He wasn’t interested in the Standard Velocity.
He asked when Yittzel went off shift, or if he could come back in 15 minutes and buy 300 more. She told him that three boxes was the limit. I expect he came back later, when someone else was at the counter.
I asked Yittzel about ammunition availability and the effect of politics. She agreed the ammunition bubble is driven by people’s fear of potential legislation during the Obama administration.

I travel around Texas dealing with hardware stores, many of which carry ammo. I also stop into gun stores and pawn shops every chance I get. I’ve been seeing .22 come back in good quantity, and the price has been steadily dropping.
Have him get shot in the head next time, and he won’t have time enough to get mad, cuz he will be dead.
I have been seeing much the same. I expected prices to drop faster, but the politics and demand from new shooters is keeping the bubble inflated.
Lots available in Alberta. I always buy 1000 every trip to the store.
I read an interesting article where the guy’s idea that .22 ammo should be treated as a commodity like gasoline or milk.
If the price was allowed to fluctuate with supply and demand the ammo makers would be the profit takers and take out the out of work price gougers who camp out in WalMart.

Actually, you can. It’s just a more involved and longer process than center fire ammo. If you do some searching online, you can find the company that sells the dies. There’s a few videos and articles on how to go about it.

Darn right, good stuff. I can’t remember ever having a FTF or FTE with the Mini-Mag
I’ve paid much less than that, but I’d pay that in a heartbeat.
Of course, only if I were stockpiling ammo, that is.

After Jan 1, many Californians will drive to other states to buy ammo. Dad lives in Reno and I visit him often.
Curious as to the brand and price for the 1000 rounds.
I foresee a thriving black market in ammunition in California.
It is not serialized. I guess that will be the next step.
During the attempted Reagan assassination there were 6 shots fired from a cheap RG 22, 4 people hit, 3 on the ground and one will never walk again. Start poking holes in somebody and it’s a game changer.

That’s why I like the 22 K-Hornet. Load it down to practically nothing if you want.
Yeah, he must have been a tough guy. A 22 cannot kill. In the whole history of the round maybe 2 or three people have died from it.
By the way, maybe you could ask Reagan, Bobby Kennedy, or the British politician a week ago what they think about 22s.
Or if you wanna feel extra stupid, go find a farmer or rancher and ask him if a 22 has any use, or if its harmless.
I never said 22s could not be reloaded, I said I cannot.
If you can, go right ahead. I do not have the time or inclination for that exercise in brain damage.
