Schultz's Starbacks move to compensate for the higher wages is similar to McDonald's; however, he lobbied for the higher wage in the first place which clearly places him at the top of the hypocrite list.

Starbuck's kids really don’t think ahead which is truly a lost art in today’s brainless and oversexed world.

If the Starbucks employees find themselves with too few work hours, they should be able to pick up another $15 per hour job to help fill the void...or maybe go back to school for a more marketable skill.

Well, since the remaining human workforce is complaining, Starbucks should start implementing automation and server robots. They would provide a better customer experience without the attitude.

I’ll get my (better)coffee somewhere affordable, thank you.

Buying roasted beans (currently Guatemalan) from costco, I make a 14 cup carafe daily for less than a buck a pot.

It’s not hypocrisy, it’s another example of a large business using regulation to help stifle smaller competitors.

Starbucks is a huge operation with a large economy of scale. They can afford machinery and business process and inventory systems that smaller competitors can’t. By hiking the minimum wage they are putting pressure on themselves, but even more pressure on the smaller coffee shops around them.

Where ever you see a generous businessman talking about higher wages, look for the following:

1) His competition depends on minimum wage labor.

2) He has a commanding lead in exactly the sort of infrastructure and scale than allows him to minimize the use of such labor.

There are just to many options for making good coffee at home and work without having to give up hard earned money to Starbucks. I haven't touched a $25 SB gift card given to me in four months. My $60 Keurig 2.0 really does a good job and I just found Walmart Good Value Donut Shop kcups for what works out to 33 cents a cup, really decent Joe. I supplement with bags of pre ground Peets Major Dickason, and Green Mountain Breakfast blend in my reusable kcup and I'm set.

A job at Starbucks sounds like a great place for a recent college graduate to get their foot in the door of the work force.
$15.00 per hour wages
Stimulating conversations at the work place
Meeting interesting, smart people in the corporate world.
Sometimes serving the glitterati.
Only have to work 10-15 hrs a week.

But wait...........................................

Simply consider demand curves as taught in economics 101 (and beyond). If you select a higher price, the quantity demanded is less. This applies to wages also. Raise the minimum wage; get less employment of minimum wage workers. Raise union wages; get reduced employment of union workers. This is real. People just don’t want to believe it.

The examples above were done through fiat, or arbitrary orders. Let’s consider another approach, increasing worker productivity.

It makes sense to pay someone more when they are more productive. If a company is more productive, they can reduce the price of their product and sell more. Combining the productivity increase (more product per worker) with increased sales of the final product may keep employment about the same - but with an increase in wages.

Of course, increasing productivity is easier said than done. There are always companies and individuals trying to do this, with some success every year. Our wages have gone up over the centuries due to increasing labor productivity. Unions, politicians, and others claim the credit, but the real credit should go to everyone who figured out a better way to get a job done.

I love that in this country a business is free to make poor decisions like hiring whiny people and paying them too much.

The article is just flat out wrong.....

Total compensation is NOT pay plus hours worked. Total compensation includes benefits and the cost of administration. It is the cost of having a person as an employee. Even if one does not include admin costs it still includes benefits (and that includes the free drinks and free pound of coffee)

Most Starnucks employees are students. They are working and going to school. Starnucks allows flexibility of schedule. Plus every Starbucks I know of pays a very nice hourly wage

Robotic Baristas.

Guarantee you they’re coming, just like kiosks in MacDonalds and robotic burger flippers.

I gotta figure out which robotics/AI company to invest in.

Robotic/AI “Judgement Day” will be the legacy of the “Unintended Consequences” of government interference in the interpersonal free market exchange of goods and services.

“While its employees contend with reduced work hours and, therefore, pay, Starbucks’ established cafes in U.S.-dominated Americas region is enjoying increased sales of:

9% sales increase in the first quarter of this year,

7% increase in the second quarter, and

an expected 6.2% increase for the current quarter, according to Consensus Metrix.”

____________________________________________

How do these numbers translate to the franshise owners all over the country? To be honest, I feel sorry for them in investing so much of them $$ and time in a business, only to be undercut by an out-of-touch CEO who makes proclamations that gun owners and people who believe in traditional marriage are not welcome in Starbucks and now this.

$15 / hour pay may not hurt Starbucks in large metropolitan areas where salaries were likely near that amount. But what about in the regional and rural areas? The franchisee pays more in salary but cuts back in hours and employees.....meaning that the franchisee is the one who works longer hours (no extra pay) to make up the difference.

With the extraordinary markup on Starbucks product they can certainly afford to pay more than other businesses.

It did not work out right because they need to raise the wage to $25/hour. Silly conservatives.

Starbucks, or as I euphemistically refer to as ‘Charbucks’, can keep their over-priced burned coffee. Like another poster opined, purchasing higher quality coffee elsewhere and brewing it yourself will result is a far superior cup of coffee at substantial savings. Your tastebuds will thank you.

Back to the subject at hand, though, Starbucks is quite the hypocrite. Lobby for a higher, unsubstainable wage, and then turn around and cut staff and hours. All the while, expecting the same level of, if not higher, productivity. Yep, sounds like liberal ‘logic’, aka ‘magical thinking’. Stupid is as stupid does.

Someone please explain to me what a “barista” is? Is it someone who just pours coffee or someone with the skills to add cream & sugar and put cream cheese on a bagel?
