Indeed. And your first conjecture is the most likely, namely too soon for events to have progressed far enough that a leak like that would be true.
However, there’s a third possibility: it’s simply a clever ploy to force the Obama administration to respond to his statement, and there’s no possible response that they might make to Trump’s claim that won’t make them look worse than the do now, since there’s basically only three possible responses:
1. No comment.
2. Not true.
3. True.
My initial thought was also that it was too soon after interviewing Hillary for a decision to have been made. My second thought was that if no decision has been made, it’s going to make Trump look stupid. So I hope you’re right that this is another of Trump’s three-dimensional moves.
