Funny story about a similar situation. I was a contractor working for the Army in a SCIF just across the highway from the base. Our building was pretty near to their training site, and it was quite common to hear the sounds of the firing range.
One afternoon after returning from lunch, I was entering the building when I was approached by a breathless, frightened snowflake. Tears in his eyes, he asked me if we were under a terrorist attack.
For a second, I was tempted to put my hand on his shoulder and say, in a serious tone "You'd best run and shelter in place, son." But my better nature came to the fore; I laughed and explained to him about the soldiers training across the highway.
