It certainly is inconsistent with data on firearms sales and requests for background checks. Is it possible that the respondents *lied* to the pollsters?

In this environment, the more somebody legitimately needs a gun, the less likely he or she will be to tell a pollster.

It’s just as likely the “pollsters” pulled it out of their waste disposal opening without bothering to poll anyone.
