The girls mother had left the door open because it was hot and she thought the dogs were tied up in the back yard.
The baby died at a hospital shortly after the attack.
the two male dogs, which are believed to be a mix of shar-pei and pit bull are owned by the womans brother.

So the owners are 100% to blame? Cool, I'm all for giving dog owners the death sentence when their little pooch kills someone.
I hate these stories. Does anybody here cycle (day or night)? I do, for miles, and would love to know the best plan of defense should I ever encounter one of these sweet, gentle-natured pooches on an accidental warpath.
One of the breeding lines for pit bulls is the Staffordshire Terrier. A dog that was bred in England specifically to be good with children!
When a pit seriously injures an innocent -- I'm all for tying up the owner in rancid bacon and dropping him off on an ice floe with some polar bears.
"pit bulls" used to be referred to as "the nanny dog" ,, shar-pei's are violent dogs bred for fighting and you can bet that these particular dogs were not bred for good temperament... Nothing is meaner than the inbred breeds ,, Chihuahuas ... but they can't inflict the damage a full size breed can... At one time Collies were the most dangerous breed due to indiscriminate breeding they were like giant Chihuahuas...
“All pit bulls should be shot and their owners imprisoned.”
If you think you are man enough, I’m standing by buttercup...or would you prefer the jackboots do your bidding for you, either way, you’re entitled to your opinion, however wrong it is and I am entitled to mine...touch my dog and you will not have clue what in the hell hit you....
Hmm, same thing the libs want to do to climate change deniers. Maybe you are in the wrong forum.
There is a *whole lot* more to this story than reported here. But let's not let any facts get in the way of the narrative.
As I repeat over and over, it is incredible how some FReepers will ridicule poor reporting like this when it's a hit job on anything conservative. But pit bulls? We don't need no stinkin facts.
More proof that it isn't just libs who will accept any story if it fits their preconceived notions.
If conservatives want to see themselves as better than ignorant liberals, they must be willing to learn. There is much more to dogs, including pit bulls, than most folks here have a clue. But what you don't know can't interfere with what you want to believe.
My second cousin had the same experience with his pit bull, except that it clamped onto his head instead of his arm. What with the jaw strength of pit bulls, I’m still amazed that his skull and brain weren’t punctured.
I will say my mixed breed pit is an exceptionally gentle dog. But she is unbelievably strong. I have seen her dismantle soup bones and leather belts in record time. While walking her once she got spooked and started to run, with the leash tangled around my wrist. There was absolutely no way I could regain my balance. She took me into a retaining wall and I got 13 stitches.
If she were to get angry and turn on somebody she’d be very formidable.
Horrible. RIP.
Pit bulls statistically most aggressive dog likely to kill or cause serious, like changing injuries

I have Boxers ,, they’re sweeties... but everyone that sees them call them pit bulls ... I have very little faith in statistics like that ... It’s like liberals calling every rifle an AR-15 or a AK-47 ...
Shar Peis are Chinese pit bulls. I had one for 14 years.
When I was in high school our family raised and sold pits. Best dogs we ever had but you had to know their short comings.
When I got our Shar Pei my vet looked at me and said are you nuts? and handed me a book to read about them. My boy was raised to be a loveable dog...and he was...to our family. Had to really watch him around other people. He always felt threatened. He also hated all other animals. Didn’t like kids except our granddaughter. She would hold him by the tail and walk behind him and she was the only one he allowed to touch his tail. After he died I was heartbroken but said I’d never own another. Too much work.
You have to know any dogs shortcomings.
the message that people must begin to understand is that dogs are descended from wild animals with wild instincts that may never show up except once...but once can be deadly...
It is not even close to 100% of how the dog is raised.
You're confused about something.
I’ve no problem with that, either. Or at least a LONG prison term. It should be exactly the same as for using a gun stupidly (or letting your kid play with one) and someone innocent dying as a result.
There’s a few lion/tiger/bear enthusiasts with similar stories.
I was a Shar Pei owner.
My niece was having some “life problems” and went to stay with my sister’s boyfriend in Colorado and took her two pit bulls “Lucca” and “Junior” for the visit. The first time they were let out on the rural property, “Junior” attacked the boyfriend’s German Shepherd mix. 30 seconds later, Junior lay in a puddle of blood, a 9mm round in his head. Had the German shepherd not had a boundary collar on and had the boyfriend not had a 9mm under the seat of his car, he would have lost his dog. The attack was utterly unprovoked. When Junior was an adolescent, I was playing with him and he started making not so playful biting movements on my hand. I immediately stopped our play session and never touched the dog or even looked it in the eye again. Pit bulls are bred to fight, they have the jaw muscles of an alligator and they bite with a tearing, head shaking movement that makes for hideous wounds. Go to Google Images, type in “Pit bull bite” Attack is in their genes and the statistics on pit bull bites makes them twice as likely to attack unprovoked as the 2nd worse breed, rottweilers.
Nice macho b.s. I can see why you own one. Compensating for something, probably.
