There is another way to take the statement.

"If there's no endorsement, then I would not invite them to speak," Mr. Trump said in an interview

The convention has a series of speakers. Some will introduce others, some may invite other to speak on their beahlf. All Trump is saying is that he won't invite these two to speak. That is not the same as saying these two would be totally denied speaking positions at the convention.

The NYT article has no context either. I have no idea how to take the remark, other than speculation on my part.

That might be how it works. Each contender gets to choose follow ups, and if Kasich and Cruz or anyone else is unfriendly to his cause, Trump won’t pick them to such a role.

But far be it for an august agency like NYT to be clear about this. That would raise far less of a brouhaha than leaving it open. There is the muck, we have the rakes.

If the two numbnuts are not going to endorse Trump, what is the purpose
of allowing them to speak at a nominating convention?

Tell me, I’d like to know.
