SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL PREVIEW

This July we have our annual festival of three concerts per week for four weeks with some of the best musicians in the game. The concerts are broadcast live over KING-FM in Seattle, which has a national following thanks to the miracle of the Internet. If you’re listening for me, I’ll be sitting in the last row in the back because that’s where the acoustics are best.

BARTOK: “CONTRASTS” FOR VIOLIN, CLARINET & PIANO, SZ. 111

This July 20 performance features Augustin Hadelich on violin, Anthony McGill on clarinet and George Li on piano.

Bela Bartok wrote this piece in 1940 for violinist Joseph Szigeti and Benny Goodman. Yes, that Benny Goodman; he commissioned the piece. It consists of three movements: “Recruiting Dance,” Relaxation,” and “Fast Dance.” You’ll catch various Romanian and Hungarian dance tunes.

This video features the late Yehudi Menuhin, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th Century.
