Polling was much easier when almost every one had a land-line phone. Pollster's would buy master phone books, which were different then regular phone books. There was a lot of free demographic information in those master phone books, which made the polling much more accurate. With cell phones, polling has become so much more difficult, because it is harder and more expensive to get a good random sample that mimics the population as a whole. Nowadays most polls are garbage, and nothing but propaganda.
