You couldn't be more spot on; since at least Roman times, the people of the British Isles have always considered themselves separate from the Continent and on occaision had to fight armed forces from the Continent.

I never understood how they could both maintain the trade relationships of the Commonwealth (the primary reason it was created) while subjecting themselves to the authority of Brussels; they really don’t “fit”.
