Commodore is a courtesy title. The official title of the officer commanding multiple ships might have been “Commander, Destroyer Squadron 6”. We called him the Commodore. He wore the uniform of a Captain.

Previously, it was a rank. I didn’t realize it was converted from a rank to a title.
I knew it could be reassigned as a rank in time of war, or at least, that’s what I remember.
