As kids we got left in the car while my parents shopped but that was back in the day of crank windows and we were old enough to crank them down ourselves.

Yes, I also remember that, but we were not infants.
I also remember moving over to the driver’s seat and playing with all the knobs and switches. When the car was started back up, the radio would come on at full volume, the windshield wipers would start moving, and the heater fan would come to life, lol.
I loved it when Dad would stop at the local pub for a couple of beers. There was an offsale window and all we had to do was ring the buzzer and we would Get poorboys, chips, cokes, peanuts you name it.
also back then the weirdo population was a bit less, way less than now and we didn’t have to worry about kids getting snatch or raped.
Adam Walsh changed things, although those parents let the kid wander around Sears alone thinking he was OK.Bad move.
But it was much cooler back then as our kiddos didn’t have to deal with the consequences of global warming. /s/
