This was in Heinlein’s TUNNEL IN THE SKY, in which they were transported to parts unknown with equipment of their own choice to parts unknown, as the “final exam” of their high school survival course. ( Our hero came with only a knife, on the advice of his older sister, who had passed the course. )
Our hero, the narrator, comes shortly upon the body of a classmate next to his “THUNDERBOLT 360”, or whatever, killed by some unknown agent. Uncle Bob regales us thereupon with a lecture about laying low.
But here in the Western ‘burbs, these issues are academic. It could be the 1950’s here in certain respects, if you know what I mean, and I think you do.
