I am a former State Senate Republican staffer, and yes it is illegal for the staff or Senator to discuss party politics or campaign from their Senate office.

Questions about the party’s process or any other campaign related topic should be sent to the candidate’s campaign. Any questions or comments about pending legislation, proposed legislation or other congressional or constituent business should be sent to the Senate office. The staffers are being paid with tax payer money to do the business of the people. The campaign staff are paid with private money to do political work at the campaign’s private office.
