Eldest manages a Papa John’s, his biggest problem is those who apply are drug addicts, or have arrest records, no GED, and suspended DL’s. He took a failing store to a record setting store with better hiring guidelines, waiting on drug test and making sure his people WORKED. Works his butt off 12-14 hrs a day. Now he is in negations to be a regional manager. He had to start off as a driver, until they fired the incompetent manager. It’s tough to find a job after 40 today. Plus he is a Type 2 Diabetic to add to job stress and health care packages.
I heard that from a manager at Lowe’s - so many people show up with drugs in their system. One problem with American retail is the abysmal training. They throw you in on a Saturday in summer and expect you to do the job properly and are furious when you ask questions!
Drug use is a big problem in W.V. too. My husband is waiting for a contractor to finish work on a building. The contractor can’t finish on time because his employees get stoned during lunch. Many people are getting some type of government assistance. So they work 5 or 6 months then quit because the cost of living is low and government pays half the bills.
A 20 year old renter of ours in Cleveland says she can work as many hours as she wants because her employer can’t keep help. No one is willing to make cookies for $11 in a non air conditioned kitchen.
I’ve hired people over 50, and appreciate the work ethic they have that too many younger people lack. If they are willing to learn, they are great assets; unfortunately, they encounter health issues (naturally) sooner than their younger peers. Definitely still a worthwhile trade-off...
