WSJ: Donald Trump Takes Risks on Guns, Gays Since Orlando Shooting
Wall Street Journal ^ | June 15th 2016 | REID J. EPSTEIN

Donald Trump’s overtures to the gay community and policy proposals on gun control in recent days have unnerved and confused some would-be allies and put the presumptive Republican presidential nominee at risk of alienating core GOP constituencies.

Since Sunday’s mass shooting at a gay nightclub by a man claiming allegiance to terror groups, Mr. Trump has pronounced himself an advocate for gays and said on Twitter that he plans to meet with the National Rifle Association to discuss “not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns.” Democratic lawmakers and candidates are pushing legislation since the shooting aimed at restricting suspected terrorists’ access to weapons.

While Trump advisers have long said his nontraditional candidacy is appealing beyond typical GOP voters, Mr. Trump risks tamping down support from base voters and grass-roots activists who have long powered Republican presidential campaigns. In 2012, 78% of white evangelicals backed Mitt Romney, compared with just 21% for President Barack Obama. The latest NBC News poll showed Mr. Trump with support from 55% of white evangelicals.

Trump had better tread carefully.
No one knows who is on the watch lists, how they get on watch lists, how anyone can get off watch lists.
This is a slippery slope to everybody being denied firearms.

not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns. .................................. Like we stop drugs? Get real, $$$$$$ talks, $$$$$$$ buys anything, politicians, votes, and black market guns.

I’m sure Trump understands the due process problem of those lists. If not his sons know.

If trump can’t even talk to the NRA without the entire party going nuts then we are probably doomed.

Trump could become the biggest megaphone the NRA has ever had. That would be a good thing.

Trump should negotiate a compromise. For example, we’ll agree to ban people on the terror watch list from buying guns if you agree to make concealed carry legal nationwide (complete reciprocity).

If you haven’t learned by now, you should make a mental note: Trump will never do the political thing. He will do the right thing. Wake up to a new America!!!!

Agree. The Donald will come up with the best “ Deal” for all of us and whatever he does will fit in with his longer term plan.

P.S. When is Hilly going to meet with the NRA.

Answer. Never, better to sit on the sidelines and demonize

People need to stop and think calmly and strategically. Trump could bulldoze the NRA’s concerns into the wide open like no-one else. He could be the best voice the NRA has ever had.

Have to love the media.

So now because Trump didn’t make some kind of anti homo rant following the attack, he’s risking alienating evangelicals.

And, we are supposed to vote for Hillary now because Trump didn’t just jump out and say machine guns for all.

With this one overture, he gains more women voters, gay voters and more “common sense” voters.

At least a third of the Republican House are GOPe. Can't alienating core GOP constituencies that are so far left that not much room to move further. Ryan is a perfect example of a GOPe. Add McConnell in the Senate and it sure explains how far America has gone in the trash.

Trump for President.

Trump has also been endorsed by Franklin Graham; I see no issue in reaching out to conservative gay people (they exist, in numbers) the types that don’t march in crazy parades, care about security and patriotism, and who don’t sue Christian bakeshop owners who won’t bake a gay wedding cake, etc. The WSJ in recent years has become too much like the rest of the newspapers in the US.

WSJ are hysterical never Trumpers. This article is all gaslighting. Mixing fact with conjecture in the most negative light. The are intentionally trying to suppress the vote for Trump.
