Schenectady PBA buys grave marker for murder victim Sha’hiim Nelligan, 8

More than three years after he died at the hands of his grandmother, Sha’hiim Nelligan’s grave finally has a proper marker.
Schenectady Police Benevolent Association President P.J. Mullen said Wednesday that the PBA learned from a civilian police department staff member that the boy’s grave didn’t have a marker at Park View Cemetery. The employee knew about this because her grandfather is buried near Sha’hiim.
After learning about the need, Sgt. Adriel Linyear, a city police spokesman, contacted the Nelligans and got their blessing. The PBA executive board voted unanimously to purchase the marker. It did so in November at a cost of several hundred dollars.
In 2013, Gloria Nelligan, who was caring for her 8-year-old grandson, was convicted of murder and manslaughter.
Prosecutors say she tortured Sha’hiim over two days in February 2013 inside the family’s Mynderese Street home to teach him a lesson about the wrongs of stealing gum from a store and then failed to get him medical help until it was too late.
“Any time a child is a victim of crime, especially murder, it’s touching,” Mullen said. “It’s the least we could do as a police department to honor him.”
The flat rectangular gray granite marker is emblazoned with the Superman logo and reads: “SHA’HIIM M. NELLIGAN

Thanks for posting that story. I like to see that the police stepped up to buy the grave stone for that little boy when nobody else in his “community” cared after his murder was no longer advantageous.
