I doubt it was “the Russians.” More likely, a hacker launching an attack from a compromised .ru machine, there’s a huge difference here. If you’re going to do a hack, you’re not going to be doing it from your home machine, you will go through a soft intermediary, a machine that has been long compromised, one that is fully “owned”, so that there is no chance logs will trace back to your home address.
