Most importantly, IMHO, is that Islamic leaders come out and say, unequivocally: 1. ISIS, the clerics who back them, and all those who kill in the name of Islam are not doing God's work, and will not go to paradise because of their actions. They are not Muslims, do not represent Islam, and are definitely not martyrs. 2. Sharia was written during a different time in a different culture. It is not the definitive law of Allah, and does not and should not supplant the laws of modern society. Islamic clerics who disagree and push for Sharia literalism are wrong and not acting in accordance to God's will.
I don't expect this to happen, but it's the ideology that is being used as justification, and this is what has to be definitively discredited. If the clerics say that can't do this, because Sharia ‘is’ the definitive law of God, then we need to have the open discussion about how this belief system is compatible with Western society.
This addresses the Myth that the majority of Muslims have moderate views.
Video from an English speaking Suni Muslim cleric panel discussion with an audience poll unanimously agreeing in sharia law, stoning, killing, punishing homosexuals.
