Were people at Disney aware there were gators in the lake ? Were there warning signs posted at the lake . News reports say that the child and his father were dangling their feet in the water at the edge of the lake . Something is wrong with this picture .
There are gators in practically every lake in Florida. Certainly one the size of the Seven Seas Lagoon will have them.
So it would have been common knowledge at the hotel.
There are no swimming signs posted everywhere. I don’t know if they have anything specifically warning of gators though.
Disney has signs posted about alligators around all the lakes and ponds. Our resort had a walkway and gazebo over one pond with signs that clearly stated that there were alligators in the pond and to keep all small children and pets clear of the waters edge. It also said Please do not feed the alligators.
There are gators in virtually every lake in Florida. We get one a year in our little one acre “designer pond.” Lake Monroe, 20 miles north of Disney, has an estimated 2500 to 4000.
Have been to The Mouse hundreds of times (annual pass). Can not remember a gator warning sign.
Even worse, gator ares now interbreeding with crocodiles that were never seen here before and the result is a much more aggressive, dangerous and larger reptile.
We are also now getting a new, very aggressive 4-foot long land-dwelling reptile in the Miami and Tampa areas.
(Problems with interbreeding: Think Obama)
Litigation, OMG!
Yes, the area was posted. Alligators take their kills and hide them under water until the flesh begins to decompose. Then they consume them.
It must be assumed that gators are in every lake in FL, because there are gators in just about every lake in FL.
Were there other witnesses to the attack?
Did anyone else other than the parents see the alligator?
I am originally from FL and sadly you have to assume there are gators in every little mudhole. I wouldn’t even jump in a pool in Miami without checking it first.
An article in the Daily Mail shows a picture of a “Steep Drop-Off - Deep Water - No Swimming” sign on the beach at the Disney resort and states that there are no warning signs regarding alligators. A nearby Grand Hyatt resort does have alligator warning signs at their lake.
