looks like we'll have a whole bunch of pointless degrees being handed out...
Semi-agree. I had to take algebra for my degree and the course was advanced enough that even though i had "ate it up" in high school, along with high school Trig, being a bit rusty made some of it pretty difficult for me.
General math, with really basic algebra, should be a requirement, but many degrees have nothing that requires such - even engineers use tables for most of what they do unless they are in R&D. I really disagree with the "diversity" replacement though - they took something that dealt in immutable facts and replaced it with brainwashing....
Math be HARD!
” If you can’t do simple algebra, you don’t belong in college. PERIOD. “
Racist!
“Too dumb to pass math, I take it. It’s time to be honest. If you can’t do simple algebra, you don’t belong in college. PERIOD. “
I didn’t take a math class in almost 40 years. I went back to school and the first class I took was Statistics and since it was an 8 week semester, I had to do double the work. Never got past Algebra in high school.
I cried, missed every social function, didn’t talk to anyone at home. 6 hours a day once I got home from work. Got a B+. If I could do it, the little babies can do it.
You would be shocked at what gets into college. You would be stunned at what makes it into community colleges! I have read printed out research papers that were final drafts printed out by accident or left on the library computers and my mouth just falls open in incredulity at the total lack of knowledge and abilities at this point in these young adults lives.
I have always pushed my children in education to learn to write well written, cohesive, and understandable paragraphs. I also push them to learn to speak well in public. I encourage them to get to the point of their presentation, be clear, and yet brief in their presentation and that they should also be able to do basic mathematics. These basic tools puts them one hundred percent ahead of the pack in today’s USA. Most current high school graduates write and read at a 5th grade level or worse and the business world needs and wants something far better.
