There’s such a thing as sawing off the limb that one is sitting on, and these foolish people look like they are getting ready to do just that.
They think that their own arrogance won’t leap right out of the mirror and swallow them up. That the devils they have embraced won’t demand their due, that the wicked piper will gladly go without payment.
