Official American cartridge name designations are established by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufactures Institute (SAAMI) and than adopted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The originating company proposes a name to SAAMI and usually that name is adopted and standardized by SAAMI. That same procedure is accomplished by CIP in Europe and other parts of the world.

Cartridge names can and have been occasionally changed by SAAMI for a variety of legitimate reasons, none of which are initiated by laymen and gun nuts. The .30 WCF became the .30-30 Win. The .280 Rem became the 7mm Rem Express and reverted back to it's original name. The .244 Rem became the 6mm Rem. Etcetera.

The .25 ACP, .32 ACP, .38 ACP, .380 ACP and .45 ACP were formally changed to .25 Auto, .32 Auto, .38 Auto, .380 Auto and .45 Auto respectively prior to WWII.

Where have you been for the last 75 years? It's the head stamps stupid!

It is no more appropriate to use an obsolete cartridge designation than it is to address a married woman by her maiden name.

"'Them' go right ahead, please amuse"

When short of maturity and knowledge, some folks point out their superior's typos in a sophomoric attempt to mask their own abundant short comings.
