Actually, NYC (especially Manhattan and Brookyln) are getting more wealthy and educated, and are home to the largest concentration of wealth in the U.S. The white proles are being replaced by immigrants in the schelpvilles in Jersey and Queens, but that is a different story.
There are wealthy/educated pockets, but for every new white American or Eastern European moving into Brooklyn fifteen “others” have been birthed in the Bronx, Harlem, etc.
An analysis of DeBlasio’s victory showed just how much farther the city had slid in the past few decades since the Dinkins mayhem. I couldn’t imagine Giuliani could even hope to get elected today; he’s too far right (and he’s actually a social liberal) and too “straight white” to win much support.
The centers of wealth in this country remain the Acela corridor and the Bay Area. Don't expect Alabama, Oklahoma, or Flori-duh to become centers of working-age wealth anytime soon.
From Charles Murray in “Coming Apart”: I noted earlier that an extremely high proportion of members of the narrow elitepeople with national influencelive in what I have called the Big Four metropolitan areas associated with New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. It appears that the highest-status zip codes are becoming more concentrated in the Big Four as well. The percentage of all Americans who live in the Big Four fell by half a percentage point from 2000 to 2010 (to 15.1 percent). Over the same decade, the percentage of people who live in SuperZips who are also located in the Big Four grew from 43 to 47 percent. This too represents a longer-term trend. In 1980, just 40 percent of people who lived in SuperZips were located in the Big Four.
By far the biggest gainer of SuperZip residents was the Washington metropolitan area, followed by New York. Los Angeles had a modest increase in its proportion of SuperZips residents. San Francisco and the Silicon Valley corridor did not increase their percentage of SuperZip residents during the decade.
I have a friend whose dad saw all this coming 35 years ago. They weren’t allowed to take everything with them, so he sold all they had, decked out a really fine ocean going yacht (gold plumbing, finest navigation, every possible finery) and sailed to the Mediterranean, where he promptly sold the boat. They then moved to England, where his family still lives.
Are these “white” births Hispanics? I know the black population is fading, but see many more Hispanics & Asians filling the void left by blacks & whites.
I’d venture it’s part of the trend toward the third-world-ization of the West.
