Howe was to hockey what Muhammad Ali was to boxing. Let's see which one gets more attention now.

Interesting thought Vigilanteman. He is not just loved in the US, but Canada as well. I got to see him play but also he would visit local rinks in greater Metro Detroit and meet with Hockey and Rink managers, owners etc. and I got to see him up close @ a rink. He was the real deal. My guess is a memorial service might have to be held @ a major Detroit Athletic Facility that holds Thousands, something like the Lion’s Stadium or U of M which can hold 104,000 is my guess...

Well, Gordie was from Floral, Saskatchewan and truly he was a regional hero.

This will be bigger news in Canada and Michigan.

Greatest hockey player ever. Gordie Howe hat trick? A goal, an assist, and a fight. Gretsky never.

Yep. I’m sure the MSNBC of sports, ESPN, will hold a marathon for him.

Howe’s funeral won’t be a huge media affair like Ali’s. Wanna bet?

Yes, he was Ali’s equivalent, at least in Michigan and Ontario, Canada. I’m sure there will be a lot of stories and memories told. Howe had somewhat recovered from the depths of Alzheimers by using stem cell therapy. At least his last two years were a little better than the ten before it.
Gordie was never known for being terribly controversial or disturbing, so those who only admire ‘anti’ heroes won’t be paying close attention.

I’m a lot more pro-Gordie Howe but I’m sure the media isn’t.

They might be having a beer (or Tim Horton's coffee) and reminiscing right now.

With Ali and Gordie passing, who are the icons from that era that remain?

The two that immediately come to mind are Jack and Arnie.
