Reid said the man is presumed dead because he has yet to be found, "the recovery process is very difficult because of the hazards of the environment,” said Reid.

Reid said the man is in his 20s, but she would not identify the man or where he is from. The man reportedly walked about 225 yards off the board walk before falling in to the hot spring.

The springs are known to reach temperatures that would be deadly to humans on contact.

Hollywood had in a movie, Dante's Peak, a couple that were in a pool when the magma shifted and parboiled them in a few seconds. I imagine that the fellow lost his nerves in a matter of milliseconds and was dead in a few more.

I’ve seen people do really insane, risky things at National Parks.

Wish I could say I never did, but when we climbed to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite, my brother and I did pose for photo with our legs dangling off the edge. I don't think they'd let you do that now, it's much stricter than it used to be.

Breaking the rules can get you into hot water.

Not just hot water! At out power plant the fly ash is dumped in the dump area. It also acts as a natural insulation.
One day a family came up and was talking to the truck driver when a little kid ran to the ash pile and jumped in. He was horribly burned from waist down.

Since then, new warning signs have gone up and people are no longer allowed in the area.

If I remember Norris Basin, there are a lot of spots where there isn’t a boardwalk, but just a trail. But most of it was boardwalk.

He walked 225 yards to the area. That’s a quarter of a mile

Half of a quarter of a mile.

No matter. He's still dead.

Basic training, 1969 Ft. Ord, CA.

Trainee is to low crawl over a course, while machine gun fire is overhead. Trainee warned to not stand up because machine gun rounds are live ammo.

Some stand up, warning notwithstanding.

I live near a beach, which often has both strong surf, undertow and cross currents. Lifeguards warn weak swimmers to stay out of the water.

Some ignore warnings. There is only a chance the lifeguards will see the idiot going under, get there in time to be able to find him, etc.

The worst part is finding the drowning idiot, since he may be moving fast along the surf line, held under by waves etc.

If hot sulphurous bubbling boiling mud isn’t enough to convince you to stay on the boardwalk, nothing is. Suicide, and perhaps Darwin.
Stupid is as stupid does. Darwin Awards: Chlorinating the Gene Pool!

One of the more interesting Award stories (Monday, November 10, 1997) Bold highlighting the stupidity:

SNAKE OWNER: BITE VICTIM REFUSED HELP

JENKINS TWP.- Stung by a cobra's bite Saturday morning, Wayne Roth refused to go to a hospital, instead downing some drinks at a neighborhood bar.

Roth's bravado apparently was such that he even boasted to patrons about the bite, the snake's owner said Sunday.

Roth died hours later. He was 38.

Now, police have seized the cobra and are asking questions of its owner, Roger Croteau of Harding, Exeter Township.

...

Police and Croteau say Roth was bitten at Croteau's home on Searfoss Road sometime between 9 and 10 a.m.

Roth later became groggy, Croteau said, and died between 11 a.m. and noon in Croteau's car on the way to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. The county coroner's office listed his death closer to 1 p.m., said Deputy Coroner Joseph Shaver.

But instead of continuing to the hospital, Croteau turned the car around and went back to a Jenkins Township bar at which the two had stopped earlier.

"I didn't know what to do, I was scared," Croteau said Sunday. "What do you do when your friend dies because your snake bit him?"

Croteau, an avid snake collector and self-described expert who regularly exhibits his snakes at regional reptile shows, offered the following account of Saturday's events.

"I met (Roth) at a convenience mart in Pittston and he wanted to come over and see my snakes." Croteau agreed.

Croteau was giving water to the snakes when he saw Roth plunge his hand into the cobra's tank, pull it out and suddenly drop it back in. Croteau saw blood on Roth's hand. But Roth denied being bitten and refused to go to the hospital, telling Croteau, "I'm a man, I can handle it," even though a cobra's venom is lethal.

Shortly after, Croteau drove Roth to the Wyoming Hose Company, at Roth's suggestion, and Roth drank two shots of alcohol and a beer. Roth bragged to patrons that he had been bitten by a cobra.

The two men left the Hose Company and stopped at Karp's Tavern on Market Street, Jenkins Township, for Croteau to use the bathroom before driving Roth home. When Croteau returned, he found Roth hanging on to the edge of the bar. Roth was groggy and quiet.

Croteau helped Roth out to the car and headed to General Hospital. Croteau held the dazed man's hand and yelled at him, "Fight to live!" Roth died just before they reached the hospital.

Croteau pulled the car over, felt Roth for a pulse and found none. Although moments from the hospital, Croteau turned around and went back to Karp's. Croteau told customers that Roth was dead. Someone called the police.

"I begged him to go (to the hospital), but I couldn't force him," Croteau said.

Croteau, a slender man with a scruffy beard and glasses, was visibly upset Sunday evening.

The past 24 hours have been difficult.

We need to make geyser a Word of the Day, something like...

“Who won the woman’s decathlon?”
“The transgendered contestant; he was a geyser.”

Which is why they are giving out his name. They don’t know who the heck he was and won’t be pulling him out to find out. They’ll either have a John Doe from witnesses with no body or they’ll have to wait until there’s a missing persons report. It may very likely be that they’ll never know.
